Equitable Distribution
How Florida divides property — fairly, not always evenly
Equitable distribution is how Florida divides marital property and debt in a divorce. “Equitable” means fair, which usually but not always means equal. Marital assets (acquired during the marriage) are divided; separate property (owned before, or inherited/gifted individually) generally isn’t. Getting the marital-vs-separate line right is where real money is won or lost.
